Sarah Orne Jewett House

Owl

It was Celia Thaxter who nicknamed Sarah “Owl,” and Annie she called “Flower.” Her own nickname was “sandpiper,” presumably after one her notable works, “Sandpiper.”

Thaxter had an affinity for birds, in one letter writing to Sarah about chasing a cat away from a sandpiper to protect it. Her somewhat estranged husband was involved with killing animal specimens for museums and this plagued her.
