Sarah Orne Jewett House

1931

This photograph shows the front hall as it looked in 1931, the year the house came into Historic New England ownership. Sarah Orne Jewett’s nephew Dr. Theodore Jewett Eastman is to be credited for ensuring that her beloved home would be preserved.

The floral arrangements are reminiscent of Jewett’s writing, both published and private. In her published work, plant life, particularly trees and flowers, are prevalent in descriptive narrative and metaphor. In her letters, Jewett writes very often to friends about the flowers in her garden and natural life she has encountered.
