Berwick Academy

While Sarah Orne Jewett was not fond of systematic study, preferring to learn from books and in nature, she evidenced warm feelings for her alma mater, Berwick Academy, commissioning close friend, artist Sarah Wyman Whitman to design a stained glass window for the school’s Fogg Memorial Library, and expressing admiration in an essay for the school’s centennial celebration:

“It is the largeness of view, the enriched personality and unselfish sympathy of those who have it in any way in charge; it is the sincerity of the students, their respect for their opportunities, their happiness and their sober-mindedness, that make together the school’s soul, and can maintain as nothing else can its noble character.”
Sarah Orne Jewett (“A Memorial of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Founding of the Berwick Academy South Berwick, Maine”)
