Charles Eliot Norton
Sally Norton’s father, Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), was an American scholar and writer who became the first professor of fine art at Harvard University and as such, the first professor of art history in America.
Norton effectively introduced the Arts and Crafts movement to America. The Arts and Crafts movement, originating in England and at its peak 1880-1910, was an aesthetic movement championing craftsmanship over mechanization and restraint over excess in interior design.
