Deephaven

While Sarah Orne Jewett herself designed the cover for the first edition of Deephaven, Sarah Wyman Whitman designed this cover for the 1893 edition. She selected mayflowers, also called hawthorns, which were one of Jewett’s favorite flowers, for the motif.

Arts and Crafts Movement artists like Whitman used motifs of stylized nature, particularly flowers and plants.
