Sarah Orne Jewett House

Deephaven

Sarah Orne Jewett created her first novel, Deephaven, 1877, from a group of sketches, some of these previously published in The Atlantic Monthly. It was Atlantic editor William Dean Howells who encouraged her to collect these into a longer work. Jewett used her home as a setting in the book, describing details about wallpaper and furnishings in the house today. The novel was a success; a second edition was printed in 1894 with illustrations by Marcia Oakes Woodbury and Charles Woodbury.
