Doctor’s Shingle

When young professionals embark on a new business, they’re sometimes described as hanging out their shingle. The expression derives from a custom in the early nineteenth century when professionals, particularly lawyers and doctors, hung signs outside of their offices that were known as shingles. This one, made sometime between 1850-1875, belonged to Sarah’s father.
