The Arts and Crafts aesthetic that Sarah Orne Jewett and her sister Mary Rice Jewett chose for the house, has been preserved and maintained at Historic New England.

The Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted decorative arts and interior design. Stylized depictions of nature, like the William Morris carpet and vivid floral wallpaper in this hall, were de rigeur in Arts and Crafts décor.
