Julia Ward Howe

Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) was an American poet, abolitionist, and social reformer best remembered for writing The Battle Hymn of the Republic.  She helped to establish the New England Suffrage Association and the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, and with Lucy Stone started the American Woman Suffrage Association. She was a regular guest at Charles Street and according to Jewett biographer Paula Blanchard, visited Jewett often in South Berwick, at Jewett’s request lecturing at women’s clubs there*.
