Mary

​My great-great-great-great- grandmother Mary Mitchell Selmore, also known as “Big Mary,” was a Passamaquoddy Matriarch from Sipayik. She was born in the early 1800s and lived to be 102. “Big Mary” witnessed the Industrial Revolution, the height of the logging industry, and the creation of the State of Maine. Amid a shifting world filled with hardships and challenges, she must have lived with beauty, fulfillment, and a deep sense of purpose to persevere through it all, raising a family and carrying forward medicine and cultural teachings. ​
