Sovereignty and sacredness are inherently tied to the land. What is done to the women is done to the land, and vice versa. The sovereignty of the land and the sovereignty of the body are inextricably linked together—inseparable and infinite. Here, a portrait of my great-great-grandmother, Mary Ranco Spencer, is reimagined as the spirit of the birch tree, a personification of the land itself.
