The Mate of the Daylight

Mate of the Daylight, 1884, is a collection of eight stories, three of which have ties to feminist interpretation of Jewett’s work: “Tom’s Husband,” a tale in which Jewett questions gender roles; “Confessions of a Housebreaker,” a dream-like, early morning escape into nature, and “A New Parishioner,” a thematic clash between the agrarian, female sensibility and urban, acquisitive male force.
