Historically, birchbark has been used for recordkeeping, depicting scenes from traditional stories, dictating historic events, and serving as scrolls for writing. Birchbark is also a container for water, food, homes, and canoes. Birch serves to hold our culture and our collective memory within the land. Within the birch is a boom pole on Penobscot River from the early 1900s.
