An Accomplished Musician

At the center of wealthy Boston society, Sally Norton became an accomplished cellist and violinist, adding gaiety to intimate evenings at 148 Charles Street, and summer twilights at Gambrel Cottage.

Edward Burne-Jones, a family friend and one of the most successful Pre-Raphaelite artists in England, painted this portrait for Sara’s father, Charles Eliot Norton. Sarah Norton probably gave Jewett the print of the Burne-Jones portrait that hangs in the guest room.
