Sarah Wyman Whitman

Whitman taught her passions: art at Boston’s Museum of Fine Art and bible study at the city’s Trinity Church. Committed to women’s education, she was a trustee of Radcliffe College.

This sketch was by Helen Bigelow Merriman, who created a posthumous painting of Whitman in 1909-10. The painting is displayed at Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Merriman also created the portrait of Mary Rice Jewett that hangs in Mary’s bedroom.
