S.O.J.

Sarah Orne Jewett achieved enormous success as a writer. She enjoyed city life and country, travel and being home; she was comfortable among society’s elite and found solace in nature. She created a strong identity for herself and a life of freedom.

Jewett placed high value on friendship. In this photograph, Jewett is on the right and Emily Tyson is on the left. Tyson, with her stepdaughter Elise (who took the photograph) and very much at Sarah’s urging, bought and restored a local estate, Hamilton House, a South Berwick home Jewett had loved all her life.

To her close friends, Jewett signed her letters, “S.O.J.”
