Literary Success

Living part of the year with Fields at her home in Boston or traveling, and part of the year in South Berwick, Jewett maintained an energetic work discipline. She wrote seven novels, a sizable canon of stories and essays, poetry, and works for children. In 1896, at the age of forty-seven, she published what is considered her masterpiece, The Country of the Pointed Firs.
