Sarah and Mary

Sarah and her sister Mary shared a deep bond of friendship. When Sarah published her first story, “Jenny Garrow’s Lovers,” at the age of nineteen, she told Mary first, in preparation for telling her parents. As an adult, Mary would support and enable Jewett’s career success by running the South Berwick household, allowing Sarah the freedom of time.
