The Country of the Pointed Firs

The Country of the Pointed Firs, 1896, is considered Jewett’s masterpiece, with one of Jewett’s most unforgettable characters,  Almira Todd—herbalist, mythical in nature, holder of the oral tradition, and witness to the rituals of the community, Dunnet Landing. Writer Willa Cather considered it one of the three most important American novels, along with The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain.
