The Mate of the Daylight

Artist Sarah Wyman Whitman played on the book title, creating a simple anchor design for The Mate of the Daylight and Friends Ashore, 1884. The title story of the collection centers on old and young men of the sea.

Both the warm red and mossy green colors used in this design were popular colors of the Arts and Crafts Movement, which embraced hues of nature.
