The Queen’s Twin and Other Stories, 1899, brings back the popular Almira Todd character from The Country of the Pointed Firs, in the title story and in “A Dunnet Shepherdess.” Another story in the collection of eight, “Martha’s Lady,” a poignant story of a longing that spans decades, has been interpreted by some modern scholars as a lesbian love story.
