The Tory Lover

Sarah Wyman Whitman designed the book cover for Jewett’s The Tory Lover (1901).

Both Jewett and Whitman suffered from poor health in the following years. Whitman died in 1904.

Sarah Orne Jewett mourned her friend, writing in 1904 to a mutual friend, “Sometimes I have a sense of her being very near — one feel ghosts much [more] often than one sees them!” MS Am 1408 (214-230), Houghton Library, Harvard University. Transcription by Terry Heller, Coe College.

Jewett was among the friends who collected letters of Wyman and published them in a celebratory book. In the book’s introduction, it is written: “When she went out of this world, it seemed as if the high light had gone from everything.” – Letters of Sarah Wyman Whitman (1907).
