In 1897, a stately South Berwick manse—Hamilton House—that Sarah Orne Jewett had loved and visited all her life, was to be sold. Developers intended to purchase the site and demolish the house to build small lots.
Sarah Orne Jewett made it her mission to save the house. She looked to her Boston friends for a potential purchaser.
